EMC Documentum REST Services 7

In June EMC quietly announced the availability of Documentum REST Services Version 7.0. Here is the announcement. Documentum REST Services is a RESTful web service implementation for interacting with Documentum repositories. This should make it easier to develop/integrate with Web2.0 and mobile apps.   REST Services supports two formats for resource representation:  JSON and XML (Atom for collections, and Documentum XML for non-collection resources).  Here is the developer’s guide, and a tutorial.  REST Services 7.0 is compatible with Content Server 7.0, 6.7 SP2, and 6.7 (no 6.7 SP1?).

About Scott
I have been implementing Documentum solutions since 1997. In 2005, I published a book about developing Documentum solutions for the Documentum Desktop Client (ISBN 0595339689). In 2010, I began this blog as a record of interesting and (hopefully) helpful bits of information related to Documentum, and as a creative outlet.

Hi Scott, thanks for this! Out of curiosity is the new rest REST API stack the recommended integration strategy for Documentum developers, or given it’s new are there still preferred legacy APIs that one would have to use to gain the necessary application coverage? Said differently what percentage of Documentum functionality would you estimate is exposed via the REST API stack and what is thinking on which components of the platform to instrument first?

That’s a good question and difficult to answer. Your choice of API will depend upon your operating environment, the kind of application you are building, functional requirements, etc. As for functional coverage of the APIs, the DFC is still the most capable API. The DFS and REST services are somewhat limited in their functionality due to both their maturity and technical constraints. That said, what little I have looked at the REST API, it seems to cover the basics necessary to develop a capable and useful client app. REST is getting a lot of attention now due to the fact that it is the preferred API of the mobile app community. As for as stated direction from EMC | Documentum… they have clearly stated that the DFC is not going away, but are certainly embracing we services — both SOAP and REST — in their newer platform offerings (e.g., xCP, D2). Hope that helps.

Maybe someone else has an opinion or experience they care to share.

Asif, that seems like a reasonable request but I don’t have enough practical experience with DFS REST to advise you. Perhaps someone else here does. Here is a like to several DFS REST tutorials I have collected. Perhaps they hold the hint you need.
